This one-hour music documentary made for German TV is a trip back to 1970s New York and the birth of punk – the house in question being, of course, the late CBGB. By now it’s a pretty familiar tale, and by the time The House of the Rising Punk made it to DVD a few years ago there had been more definitive docs made on the subject. But in its meager 60 minutes Dreher’s film manages to cram in all the major players and extract a cohesive and entertaining tale from authoritative voices like Patti Smith, Dee Dee Ramone, Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell of Television, and filmmaker Jim Jarmusch.

The musical footage is well worn too, like a sturdy, reliable pair of old boots, and if you’re at all familiar with proto-punk history you won’t discover hidden gems or unearth new revelations here. What you will get is a concise and condensed version of the tale that is most successful in attaining a gritty sense of place: the danger and excitement of the Bowery circa ’70s, anecdotal tales reinforcing the spirit of a long-gone era of bums falling to the street from flophouse windows, terrifying drug scores in Alphabet City, and paying $42 a month in rent. Lower Manhattan may have changed irreversibly – and the house where punk rose may now be a high-end men’s fashion shop – but the music lives on.
