Terra Guitarra is an instrumental duo of acoustic guitarists who perform their own brand of nuevo-flamenco music, that popular Spanish-influenced style that is comprised of highly-rhythmic strumming and fast-picked solos. Their new Dragonfly album is their fourth recording and it exemplifies their strengths -- interplay and supportiveness between the guitars, strong melodies, breath-taking solos, and well-planned arrangements. They play with inventiveness, finesse and passion. The music is festive, uplifting and joyful. As their name suggests, the music consists of earthy, nature-inspired guitar explorations within a Latin style. Bruce Hecksel handles the bulk of the songwriting and the lead guitar solos (mostly on a classical or Spanish-style nylon-string guitar) and Julie Patchouli is in charge of rhythm-guitar (often strumming but sometimes finger-picking a steel-string acoustic). Both contribute percussion and other musical brush-strokes within the production. Besides his artistic endeavors in the musical world, Hecksel also is a talented painter (his artwork adorns the album cover and the CD's inside booklet). The duo comes out of a strong folk singer-songwriter background (with time also spent playing rock, jazz and classical) which contributes to their melodic sensibilities. Terra Guitarra is quickly becoming one of the top nuevo-flamenco groups in the world, garnering extensive airplay and legions of new fans with each new recording, and performing several hundred concerts every year.
