In anticipation of seasonal coughing, Christopher Seaman, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra's music director, started off Thursday's concert with a lesson in silent coughing. A handkerchief in front of the face, he demonstrated, helps quell extraneous sounds that could interrupt a recording session -- particularly the live recording session taking place on the concert's second half.
Vaughan Williams' A London Symphony was being recorded as part of an upcoming Harmonia Mundi release of the RPO and Seaman performing English music. The disc should be out in time for Seaman's 70th birthday celebration next year.
"You have the first half of Fingal's Cave and Schumann's Piano Concerto to rehearse your coughing," he announced with his heartwarming wit.
