Submarine Commander (1958)
by Rear Admiral Ben Bryant

During World War II, Commander Ben Bryant captained three different British submarines; P-211, HMS Sealion and the HMS Safari. He took part in the grim Norwegian campaign surviving the hazards of German depth charging. Bryant landed and retrieved British agents in occupied Europe and went on several Mediterranean war patrols, preying on Erwin Rommel's supply lines to North Africa. By the end of 1945 he was the greatest British submarine Ace to survive World War II, sinking 32 enemy ships.

The command of a submarine in wartime requires mastery of a group of varied skills, courage of a high order and the ability to make quick decisions. - Ben Bryant clearly explains all of the technicalities involved in commanding a submarine. He explains why the World War II submaring was a more efficient fighting unit when on the surface than when... more » submerged; and how he was able to average ten tons of enemy shipping for every sixteen-pound round fired from his three-inch gun.

The submarine, particularly in WWII, was a very versatile weapon. Submarines were used as torpedo boats, gun boats, minelayers, troop carriers, store carriers, tankers, navigational beacons to guide surface vessels, rescue stations for aircraft flying over the sea, reconnaissance units, survey ships, convoy escorts, anti-submarine vessels, power stations to supply electric current to shore installations, and for landing and taking off agents on enemy soil.

review:
This is a wonderfully written semi-autobiographical book following a man from initial acceptance into the British submarine community all the way thru to command. While some Americans may think its not applicable based on its roots, I would argue that it is very applicable, even for today. He shares many comical and some harrowing tales.
