Kool & The Gang Albums
Collection 1969-2013

Kool & the Gang was een van de belangrijkste funk/disco-
bands. De leden begonnen midden jaren 60 als de Jazziacs, 
pas in 1969 werd de naam veranderd in Kool & the Gang. 
De band had de grootste populariteit bij het grote publiek 
vanaf het eind van de jaren 70 tot midden jaren 80.
In de Verenigde Staten waren ze al populair als een vrijwel 
volledig instrumentale funkband. Hun eerste internationale 
succes kregen ze door hun bijdrage aan de film Saturday 
Night Fever uit 1977. Een jaar later kwam de leadzanger 
James "JT" Taylor bij de band, en grote hits als Ladies' Night, 
Celebration en Get down on it volgden. De koers die toen 
gevaren werd ging wat meer naar de disco. In 1985 deden 
ze mee met het groots opgezette Live Aid. In hetzelfde jaar 
scoorden ze ook hun grootste crossover hit 'Cherish. In 
1988 verliet James J.T. Taylor de band om een solocarrière 
te starten, die commercieel gezien overigens niet echt uit de 
verf kwam. Kool & The Gang scoorde hierna geen hits meer.
Op 20 juni 2006 overleed, na een langdurige ziekte, de in 
New Jersey geboren gitarist Claydes Charles Smith, op de
leeftijd van 57 jaar. Behalve bij het oprichten van de band 
was hij ook betrokken bij het componeren van het nummer 
'Celebration'. Heden geeft de band nog steeds optredens 
over de hele wereld. Op 21 juli 2007 speelden zij op het 
Saturday Night Disco-feest Globall in de Arena te Amsterdam.
De band bracht in 2007 een nieuw album uit: Still Kool.
