Conny Froboess - Die Singles, 1960-1962 (BCD 15411)

Conny Froboess was Germany's idea of a rock & roll star -- not that she really had that much to do with rock & roll, but she was young (i.e., under 50) and sort of looked the part, and could generate a convincing sound in front of an electric band. Based on the evidence of this compilation -- which covers the years that overlapped with her prime years as a youth star -- she was Germany's answer to Connie Francis; thus, it's no accident that the highlight of this 25-song collection is her rendition of "Lippenstift Am Jacket," a translation of Francis' "Lipstick on Your Collar," backed by lots of animated drumming and twangy guitars. She seems a bit more at home with the tamer "Midi-Midinette," a cute pop ditty that's closer to the sort of song that Peggy March was doing when she wasn't doing "I Will Follow Him"; or the 50s-style vocal pop of "Weir Wird Der Erste Sein." Indeed, with the range that she demonstrates here, Froboess was probably closer to being the German-speaking world's answer to Petula Clark, and especially what Clark was doing with her early-'60s French-language recordings. Rock & roll enthusiasts can safely skip most of what's here, though pop fans may enjoy a goodly chunk of this CD -- Froboess could do everything from swing-influenced vocal pop to rock & roll, and do it well enough so that it's still worth hearing 40 years on (though it will help in enjoying her work if one speaks German). In addition to her solo recordings, there are duets with her onscreen partner Peter Kraus and vocalist Rex Gildo. As with most of Bear Family's releases intended for distribution at home, the annotation is also in German.
