Warships 2002-12

The first Udaloy Class warship of the Russian fleet became operational about 1980 and was listed as a large Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) destroyer. The Udaloys, also known as Project 1155 ships, are comparable to the US Navy's Spruance Class of ASW destroyers and, with their impressive array of sonars and armament, the two classes of ship also appear to be very similar in terms of offensive capability and sensors. In fact, back in the early 1980s, the Udaloy Class represented the first general-purpose destroyer to be built for the Russian fleet, reflecting similar trends in the West as the Cold War reached its finale. The aim was to provide the Soviet fleet with large general-purpose warships that could operate in non-war scenarios as independent units and yet also become significant additions to a battle group in time of conflict The last of what is today known as the Udaloy I configuration became operational in July 1991, to be followed by a vessel embracing a major change of configuration - the RPS Admiral Chabanenko - which is known as a Udaloy II (or Project 1155.1). The Chabanenko, from the Northern Fleet, visited the UK's Devonport Naval Base in the summer of 2002, for Navy Days and that is where WARSHIPS IFR was able to get a close look at her.
