Post Description
While we haven’t heard much from Seattle’s Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, former frontman Benjamin Verdoes has gone ahead and whipped up his own solo debut. The Evil Eye, released on January 14th through Brick Lane, finds Verdoes exploring new sonic territories far and away from the jangly raucous found on past Mt. St. Helens records like Where the Messengers Meet.
Verdoes comments: “The Evil Eye is a record I made for a beautiful person. It is a rebuttal to those seemingly powerful forces that tell you what you can and cannot do–the eyes that watch carelessly and tongues that move thoughtlessly in an attempt to describe and limit something that is spiritual and perfect. It is a love story.”
Lead single Evil Eye sounds like Death Cab might after binging on old Motown records. Moody indie pop woven from guitar and keyboard parts give way to a grand string arrangement and a syncopated bridge that you could almost imagine at a prom slow dance if the more tumultuous sounds didn’t swirl back to the fore. It’s all streamlined into something seamless — and far smoother than the garage psych Verdoes used to kick out with his old band.
