Tommy DeVito, een van de oprichters van de succesvolle popgroep The Four Seasons, is afgelopen maandag op 92-jarige leeftijd overleden. Hij stierf in een ziekenhuis in de Amerikaanse stad Las Vegas aan de gevolgen van het coronavirus.

DeVito was in het ziekenhuis opgenomen vanwege complicaties als gevolg van COVID-19.

De zanger en gitarist verliet The Four Seasons in 1971, nadat andere bandleden hun frustraties over zijn vermeende gokverslaving hadden geuit. Frankie Valli en Bob Gaudio, die samen met DeVito de groep oprichtten, betreuren op sociale media het verlies van hun voormalige collega. "We zullen hem missen en wensen zijn familie veel sterkte in deze moeilijke tijd."

DeVito werd in de jaren negentig opgenomen in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Hij was betrokken bij grote hits van de groep, zoals Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry en Rag Doll.

DeVito werd ook geportretteerd in de succesvolle musical Jersey Boys. In 2006 bracht hij nog het soloalbum A Man for All Seasons uit.

Volgens Alfred Nittoli, een vriend van DeVito, wordt in New Jersey een ceremonie voor de zanger georganiseerd.
