³º attending crowd at last year’s Masters Of Rock º ³
³º concert in the Czech Republic (celebrating the º ³
³º first decade of the band’s existence), º ³
³º Bloodbound tease things out with a (possibly º ³
³º sampled) intro before launching off into the º ³
³º hour-plus performance. Playing in the mode of º ³
³º power metal with a healthy splash of fantasy, º ³
³º the performance is driven by versatile drumming, º ³
³º trilling keyboard, high-speed guitar and bass, º ³
³º and vocals that seem to have studied well the º ³
³º ways of Rhapsody of Fire and similar acts. º ³
³º Demons, warriors, honor, dragons, fire, kingdoms º ³
³º and mystical pacts provide the subject matter º ³
³º while heavy chants from what sounds like a mass º ³
³º of people (whether audience-provided or pre- º ³
³º recorded) provide a rhythm-focused choral º ³
³º aspect. º ³
³º º ³
³º After revving things up with a couple of full º ³
³º songs (including the meaty “When Demons º ³
³º Collide”) vocalist Patrik Johansson calls upon º ³
³º the audience to give the night their full energy º ³
³º as he informs them that they’ve been chosen to º ³
³º serve as participants in the recorded DVD of the º ³
³º event. Gauntlet thrown to the crowd, the band º ³
³º rides on their momentum into the genre-honoring º ³
³º “In the Name of Metal”, keeping spirits high. º ³
³º º ³
³º A couple of additional odes to metal (like º ³
³º “Metalheads Unite”) are tucked in through the º ³
³º rest of the concert, giving things a bit of º ³
³º Manowar flavor when they crop up, but the band º ³
³º covers a fairly wide spread of the power metal º ³
³º purview across the fourteen-track set-list. Also º ³
³º striking is how gracious they are to their º ³
³º audience, working hard to keep them engaged and º ³
³º regularly throwing out a “Thank you!” at the end º ³
³º of songs. º ³
³º º ³
³º While the production is pretty good by live º ³
³º album standards, there is some slight gumminess º ³
³º to it when things get particularly energetic. º ³
³º Although this gives an impression of the band º ³
³º rearing up together as one magic-fused monster º ³
³º (if you wanna imagine it that way), it’s also º ³
³º kind of disappointing the way some of the º ³
³º instruments get lost in the din. Also, for some º ³
³º reason, the solo guitar has a tendency to be º ³
³º drastically under-mixed, making for sadly º ³
³º anticlimactic moments when the rest of the band º ³
³º cuts quiet to spotlight its playing, as only a º ³
³º distant tinny shredding can be heard. Judging by º ³
³º the crowd’s still-positive reactions, this was a º ³
³º problem that only emerged in the post- º ³
³º production. º ³
³º º ³
³º One Night of Blood is a pretty respectable live º ³
³º album, finding the band in good form and earning º ³
³º kudos by caring for the enjoyment and engagement º ³
³º of the concert’s attendees. As with most live º ³
³º albums, the release is likely more special for º ³
³º big fans of the band, but (speaking from º ³
³º personal experience here) it’s a good show even º ³
³º if you haven’t previously heard any of º ³
³º Bloodbound‘s material. º ³
