Synopsis:

Dramatization of events from the Second Opium War which culminated in the looting and destruction of imperial estate "Yuan Ming Yuan", AKA the Old Summer Palace by invading English and French troops. 

(The role of the emperor was the first feature film role for Tony Leung Ka Fai (aka Tony Leung) which started a career that included over 80 feature films in only 20 years.)

This film gave an accurate depiction on how Ci Xi, who was commonly known as Empress Dowager, came to power during the Second Opium War. Her rise to power begun with the blood coup, which ensured her reign on China for more than half a century. This movie is also one of the first jointly made by Hong Kong and China after the Cultural Revolution.
