Susanne Wallner komt terug uit een concentratiekamp in de ruïnes van Berlijn na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, om te ontdekken dat iemand anders in haar flat leeft: Dr. Hans Mertens. De oorlog maakte hem depressief en hij drinkt heel wat alcohol. Susanne vraagt hem om te gaan maar hij wil niet. Zodoende delen zij de flat van Susanne en ontdekken zelfs hun sympathie en hun liefde voor elkaar. Dat moedigt hem aan natuurlijk. Maar dan hoort hij dat Ferdinand Brückner, die zijn Kapitein was tijdens de oorlog, nog in leven is en ook in Berlijn leeft.

The film is beautifully and sensitively made, and possesses a shining optimism that is surprising for its time.
