Every now and then an artist dwindles into obscurity as history washes away their mark on music. Such is the fate of Jobriath – the first ‘publicly out’ gay rockstar who was launched in the 1970s as the American David Bowie. His name has since become synonymous with what happens when someone is caught up in the ‘hype machine’, a legendary cautionary tale of how a musician’s career can rapidly crash and burn.

Jobriath A. DBorn Bruce Wayne Campbell, he was a young talented pianist and musician who rebranded himself as Jobriath and signed a record deal that was the equivalent of a million dollars in 1972. His debut album, considered to be a brilliant record amongst today’s music aficionados, was over-hyped to the point of over-exposure – think Lady GaGa’s Born This Way as a modern-day equivalent. The album flopped, his flamboyant performances left rock audiences perplexed, and the marketing ploy of outing himself backfired.

A rushed second album compounded his commercial failure and he was promptly dropped by his record company, Elecktra. He disappeared from the limelight almost as quickly as he had shot into it and ended his days singing jazz standards in The Chelsea Hotel, renaming himself Cole Berlin (a nod to Cole Porter and Irving Berlin). Tragically, he was the first well-known musician to die of AIDS in 1982. As a result, his music was forgotten.

Jobriath A.D is a new documentary which seeks to rehabilitate his reputation and bring his music to a new generation. It features a wealth of archive footage, music, and performances, and features contributions from luminaries such as Jayne County, Gloria Jones, Jake Shears, Marc Almond and Jobriath’s manager Jerry Brandt. The screening of the film at the BFI Lesbian and Gay Film Festival will be followed, appropriately enough, with a glam rock event.
