Sergiu Celibidache (Roman, 11 juli 1912 - Parijs, 14 augustus 1996) was een Roemeense dirigent.

EuroArts line of DVDs showing famous conductors in both rehearsal and performance is truly an invaluable educational tool. In this volume, conductor Sergiu Celibidache, widely heralded as a Bruckner interpreter, is seen conducting the SWR Stuttgart Radio-Sinfonieorchester in a 1965 performance of Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel and a 1982 performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. The DVD gives listeners -- both novice and seasoned alike -- a rare glimpse at a seasoned, venerable conductor at work behind the scenes. Celibidache's attention to detail and absolute insistence on having each and every note sound precisely as it does in his mind is simply mesmerizing. Seeing this incredibly detailed work transformed into an effortless-sounding, organic whole during the performance is equally rewarding and instructive on the benefits of such focus and nuance during the rehearsal. Very little changes with Celibidache's rehearsal or performance technique during the 17-year gap, including his rather brusque personality. Apart from the educational value of observing the rehearsals, the performances themselves are first-rate. Sound quality from 1965 and 1982 is equally clear and warm. The videography during Scheherazade is a bit annoying, with too many close-ups down the f-holes of the concertmaster's violin, but apart from that, the DVD is as pleasing for the eyes as for the ears.
