De naam UB40 is ontleend aan een voormalig formulier van de Engelse sociale dienst om een werkloosheidsuitkering (UB = Unemployment Benefit) aan te vragen. De band heeft een sterk multicultureel karakter, zowel muzikaal als qua afkomst; de leden hebben hun wortels liggen in Engeland, Schotland, Ierland, Jamaica en Jemen.
