Homefront speelt zich af in 2027. Amerika is bezet door Noord-Korea, nadat een economische crisis ervoor gezorgd heeft dat de Verenigde Staten hun wereldmacht verloren hebben. In het verhaal, dat geschreven is door John Milius (Apocalypse Now, Red Dawn), volg je het Amerikaanse burgerverzet tegen de Noord-Koreaanse bezetters.

De game is een first-person shooter, waarin je als onderdeel van het verzet probeert de Noord-Koreanen te verslaan en te verjagen van Amerikaanse bodem. Tijdens de gevechten schiet je jezelf als infanterist een weg door de vijandelijke linies. Daarnaast krijg je soms de controle over grond- of lucht-voertuigen.

Naast de verhaalmodus bevat Homefront een uitgebreide multiplayermodus waarin 32 personen het tegelijk tegen elkaar kunnen opnemen. Hoe beter de gamer speelt, hoe meer punten hij binnenhaalt in een multiplayerpotje. Met deze punten kunnen vervolgens speciale wapens gekocht worden, die verschillen in prijs. Denk aan een kogelvrij vest, een bazooka, een op afstand bestuurbare helikopter die raketten kan afschieten of een tank.
