Bear Family's three-volume And the Answer Is: Great Answer Discs from the '50s and '60s series documents the phenomenon of answer records, presenting both the original hit and the response to the single. These were songs designed to respond to hit singles, with the hopes that the second record would climb up the charts as well. Answer records were prevailant in country, pop and R&B, but on And the Answer Is: Vol. 2, Bear Family concentrates on pop-rock records from the '60s. Pop-rock answer records never produced a classic on the level of Kitty Wells' "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," and her response to Hank Thompson's "Wild Side of Life." Instead, most pop responses were simply novelties, which means And the Answer Is: Great Answer Discs from the '60s is designed for fetishists and collectors with a taste for the arcane and unusual. Anyone who has a passing interest in the bizarre side roads of pop music will find the compilation very entertaining.
