Post Description
This folk-pop debut collection is all heart-pounding urgency and heartfelt singalongs, and at times, In the Battle Years is almost overwhelming — the intensity of the harmonies, the mountain-top choruses, the sheer force of their handclaps — but the band always pulls back just at the right moment.
In the Battle Years opens with one of the most exuberant break-up songs in the world, complete with a relentlessly driving chorus — “I’m not going to miss you, no!” — that’s catchy and defiant. The third track on the record is “Farther in the Fire,” the band’s excellent 2015 CBC Music Searchlight entry, which earned them a place in the top 10 of the national competition. “Hey Now” the quietest, gentlest song, also features the most delicate instrumentation. It’s perfectly placed to reflect and catch one’s breath, savour the gorgeous violin, before gearing up for the final three tracks. The final track, “Billy,” is a haunting, foot-stomping, murder confessional, like something that’s rolled down the mountain, passed generation to generation, a folk song sprung from real life events but now with modern affectations.
The potency of Hillsburn’s sound isn’t just compelling, it’s galvanizing, and this is a thrilling debut from some great, new Canadian artists.
