Submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy, 1904-45 (1986)
by Norman Polmar & Dorr B. Carpenter
When you read this history, you will feel curious about the wide variety of Japanese submarine classes and types. During World War II, the U.S. Navy mass-produced basically one kind of submarine in order to faithfully execute the submarine's main objective, which is to destroy enemy supply lines. This brought great success to their submarine warfare. On the other hand, the traditional application of submarines in the Japanese Navy was to operate in fleet warfare; therefore, the cruiser-type submarines were developed to participate in lengthy cruising operations, the fleet type to accompany the battle fleet, and the medium size for use in coastal defense. These submarines brought some tangible and intangible successes in the beginning of the war. During the middle and latter parts of the war, however, the conditions of warfare in the Pacific were drastically changed due to the unexpected efficiency of antisubmarine tactics in the U.S. Navy.
