Maciek behoorde tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog tot het Poolse leger dat door de regering in ballingschap vanuit Londen wordt geleid. In de 24 uur na de bevrijding is er een burgeroorlog losgebarsten tussen nieuwe communistische machthebbers en restanten van het officiele rechtse leger. Maciek krijgt de opdracht een Communistische districtsleider te doden maar hij kent hem uit zijn verleden als soldaat en staat nu voor een belangrijke keuze.
