De oudere, melancholische en verslagen Ventura is na 34 jaar huwelijk door zijn vrouw Clotilde verlaten en kijkt terug op een hard en vreugdeloos leven. Ventura schrijft haar een onbeholpen, maar hartverscheurende brief (of beter, laat hem schrijven). Keer op keer draagt hij de brief voor, terwijl hij op het punt staat om uit zijn wijk te worden losgesneden en een kaal appartement te betrekken.
