Post Description

Gru is a one man instrumental project of Polish virtuouso Piotrek Gruszka. Gru is heavily driven by the amazing guitar and bass work which drives most of this album. The riffs are just mindblowing and the solos have a wonderful spacey feel that lets you just drift away whilst listening to it. The guitarwork may be incredibly technical but not over-the-top so as to ruin the awesomeness of this album. Apart from the guitars the electronics are also really well handled and add an atmosphere of sound to the songs. The programming of the drums is also really tasteful and does not sound really triggery and really helps the dynamics of this album instead of hindering it like in most cases where programmed drums are used.

The structure fornearly all of the songs of the album is essentially an amibent intro followed by an opening riff which will repeat a couple of times and then lead into a solo. After that there is usually a little ambient break before another solo kicks in and after the second solo the song ends with the opening riff fading out to more ambient noise.

The guitar work throughout the album is quite amazing as the smooth way that all the riffs and solos flow make most the songs on the album. The guitarwork is technical yet flowing and fills the gap that a vocalist would usually fill. As they say picture paints a thousand words but in this album the music paints a thousand words.

The programmed drums are also really good not sounding clicky or dominant as you may find with other bands that use programmed drums. This really enhances the dynamics of the songs giving the feel that there is a real drummer there.

The electronics which are used for ambient sounds are used really well and add atmosphere and don't dominate the sound making them quite an important role in this albums success.

The album follows an obvious pattern in the song structure but none of the songs sound similar or the same. This is the best part of Cosmogenesis, it takes a long time for it to get boring. You could listen to it for at least 2 weeks straight and not get bored. You will always find something new every time you listen to it.

The guitars are quite dominant in this album but the programming of the drums and use of electronics is quite well done which helps my conclusion in which I say:

This album is amazing, a must listen to for fans of progressive rock. It has an amazing spacey yet heavy feel to it and is a very fun listen. Highly recommend giving it a spin.
