De knallende soundtracks uit de hoogtijdagen van de blaxploitation films zijn regelmatig verzameld, toch voegt Souljazz er daar nog één aan toe. En terecht, want voor het eerst zijn de archieven van alle platenmaatschappijen die er in dit gebied toe doen open gegaan, waardoor op 2 CD’s een mooi compleet beeld van deze tijd ontstaat. Onbekendere films als Cool Breeze en Savage worden vertegenwoordigd met net zoveel funk, soul en wahwah gitaren als de bekendere broeders, zoals Troubleman (Marvin Gaye), Uptight (Booker T) en natuurlijk de baddest mutha**** of them all, Isaac Hayes’ onsterfelijke Shaft. Allemaal essentieel, right on.
