MapleStory's a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) where you can play and interact with many, many people at one time as opposed to like 4 on a console game. You have a character that you raise and equip with armor, weapon and things and you go and fight monsters to level up and gain items.
It is free, and it's safe as long as you don't go around telling people your personal information. Just use common sense.
