Post Description

Singer-songwriter,

Friendly, Traditional Singer-Songwriter Folk, Full Of Simple, Pure and Worldly Rich Heartfelt Stories

Singer-songwriter C. Daniel Boling has recorded ten albums since aged 50, he became a full-time musician in 1999, but the veteran act is showing no signs in slowing down.
Among those helping out there’s Kelly Mulhollan, Jon Gagan, Char Rothchild, Jono Manson (also co-producer, and owner of The Kitchen recording studio in Santa Fe, NM where the album was made), Jason Crosby, Donna Mullholan, Michael J. Ronstadt and John Egenes.

The timely All Of Us Are Immigrants opens,
‘Juan arrives from Cuban just a couple of weeks ago,
Ernesto came a few years back from deep in Mexico.
Fernanda made it yesterday after six months ago on the run,
she fled her home in Chile when the cartel killed her son.
Tony’s parents came from China eight decades ago,
he served the US government for thirty years or so.
Without a penny in his hand,
my great grandfather worked his passage here from Ireland’.
Brilliant storytelling and a poignant tale.”

It is one of the finest immigrant songs you’ll ever get to hear. Boling’s care of detail and empathy with everyday people is one of his finest virtues, wrapped in sensitive musical arrangements, a fabric of outstanding beauty is woven.

Ever Since I Woke is accompanied by strummed acoustic guitar, and female harmony vocals that immediately springs into life as he speaks of being a better person.
For Better Or Worse has a pleasing lilt to it, speaking of how we have to try reach out to help others; not resting on our laurels. It’s about, how we, as humans are all fallible.
I Don’t Know How is a sombre piece, warmed in gentle, rolling piano Boling singing of the situation we find ourselves at the present time in world.
When we get to The Sycamore Tree we find it escorted by clawhammer banjo and again sees him looking back in time, to a distant childhood memory.

The delectably tender Maya I Adore You is a co-write with Tom Paxton, about family life, and was inspired by his own grandchild, Maya. It sounds steeped in Irish whistle, and Bodhran?
One of his finest efforts here has to be If I Were You, full of wistful, descriptive lyrics. Quite sombre, it’s a song about his father who served as a life-time U.S Air Force man.
Staying with the familial theme, Whadya Do Today? is about the loss of his parents; how it has been 24 years since his mother’s passing, and four since his father’s and the affect it still has on him today in daily life. Oh, it has more hints of Tom Paxton weaving through each line, like a golden thread.

The Leash is about a humour warmed ode of him as a small boy with his dog by his side and the role of his Mama too. A simple, personal song with a loving message, totally charmed by Boling’s clawhammer banjo and Love, Dan is another from that period.
Chugging along at a nifty pace, the fun ditty, Public Domain was written for his good friend and frequent co-writer, Tom Paxton. Ever more banjo and acoustic guitar this cheerful cut possesses a wry message. Quarter sees Boling playing with language; nothing serious … or is it?

Tucked away in the middle Toward The Fire is another topical subject, of how the Santa Anna Wind in California burns again. Boling sings about A hero from the school choir etc ; and how these people put their own lives in jeopardy to safe guard others and as he himself worked as a Federal Law Officer for 30 years, he’s witnessed occasions when people have put their lives lives in jeopardy in safeguarding others.
Like the more astute of us know know, Tom Paxton from whom he has learnt much, is something of a National Treasure, so I guess that makes C Daniel Boling a State Treasure at the very least.
