Post Description
The current Spikedrivers line-up of Ben Tyzack, Constance Redgrave and Maurice McElroy are celebrating their tenth year together and all that hard work pays off with this album.
If you’ve heard their previous albums then you know that they are not a band that sticks to the usual formats. They clearly love the sound of the Delta but they also explore all the facets of the blues while adding their own distinct style.
‘Seven’ shows all the influences they have gathered along the way and distills them into an album that flows from beginning to end. Starting with the gospel vocals and driving slide guitar of ‘Baby Born’ all the way through to the haunting instrumental reprise of ‘Guided by Spirits’ with more than a few surprises along the way.
If you like slide guitar then you‘ll find it here in spades. Ben Tyzack has to be one of the best around. Just listen to their take on ‘John Henry’ or his own ‘Steady Rollin’ Train’ and you’ll see what I mean. Constance Redgrave on bass and Maurice McElroy on drums lay down an incredibly tight foundation that lets him soar.
Other tracks demonstrate their ability to create an atmosphere and a sense of place. ‘Such as Southern Place to Be’ can only be described as southern Gothic. You can just feel the heat. ‘Natalie Walks’ creates a dreamlike landscape while ‘My Rooster Stopped Crowing’ puts you slap bang on the front porch with a beer in your hand.
