Tonight's edition of the popular science show really is a matter of life and death. Ten years ago, a Norwegian skier shook the medical world when she was brought back to life after being clinically dead.
Anna Bagenholm's heart had stopped beating for more than three hours but was eventually resuscitated. She had slid into an icy river and become trapped under the ice. But instead of killing her, the freezing water that caused her core temperature to drop more than 20 degrees below normal also protected her brain and she eventually made a full recovery.
In this programme, anaesthetist Kevin Fong shows how doctors are looking for ways to deliberately use hypothermia to save lives. In the US, he sits in on an operation where the patient is put into suspended animation, giving surgeons time to perform a procedure that wouldn't otherwise be possible.
