Without revisiting all of what I have written in previous reviews, suffice it to say that I consider blues music to be a special form of artistic expression. Its critics call it repetitious and monotonous but part of its charm is this simplistic nature for which it is so unjustly criticized. While it may not be sufficiently sophisticated or complex enough to satisfy the ears of the self-proclaimed musically elite, there is something uniquely genuine about it. It is honest and authentic, traits mostly forgotten in this present generation. The old blues masters did not attempt to dazzle their audiences with blistering solo guitar breaks, as they did not perform merely as an exhibition of advanced manual dexterity.
They played and sang because they had stories to tell and the blues was their vehicle by which to tell them. Their simple songs were about the most profound of subjects: life itself. They spoke of struggles and about trials and triumphs. The blues does not discriminate, as stories about the reality of life pertain to all, regardless of race or national origin. Unless you are extremely fortunate or delusional, life is a struggle for us all and all can relate at least in part to the message of the blues. Sadly, it seems that modern blues music has become more about the musician and less about the message, or to paraphrase Pete Seeger "where have great song writers gone?".
