Don Diego de la Vega, de enige zoon van Don Alejandro, keert terug naar het Californië van 1820 om het op te nemen tegen de corrupte Spaanse bezetters. De elegante charmeur en losbol van overdag verandert s" avonds in de gemaskerde zwaardvechter Zorro. De denderende hoeven van zijn paarden Tornado en Phantom en zijn flikkerende zwaard jagen angst aan bij de bezetters en vreugde bij de onderdrukten. Als brandmerk en teken laat hij steeds een Z achter na zijn overwinning.
