Douglas speelt in deze 'social documentary with a chase' (zijn woorden) een uit de gevangenis ontsnapte cowboy van de oude stempel die niet opgewassen is tegen de 'moderne tijd'. 'Do you realize how many fences there are getting to be? And the signs they've got on them? No hunting, No hiking, No fishing, No trespassing, Private property, Closed area, Stop moving, Drop dead,' zegt hij in de film. Maar verbodsbordjes zijn nog tot daar aan toe. Ook de straffen zijn strenger. En de sheriff (Matthau) heeft een walkie-talkie en rijdt in een jeep. Vluchten kan niet meer. Of nauwelijks.
