This Japanese 3cd set contains the two Vienna shows and both are of similar
extremely high quality. First up - I'll deal with the incorrectly dated
packaging as it has led to confusion in the past. The packaging states Disc 1
and tracks 1-4 on Disc 2 are the 29th May 1987 show, and Disc 2 tracks 5-13 and
all of Disc 3 are from the 30th May 1987 show - this is obviously a (pretty
terrible) mistake. The first Sign O' The Times show on here (Disc 1 & Disc 2
tracks 1-4) is the 30th May 1987. The second Sign O' The Times show on here
(Disc 2 tracks 5-13 & Disc 3) is the 29th May 1987. Ok, all clear? The 30th May
show is an exceptionally good, clear recording and has to be in contention for
the best audience recording of the tour. The audience level is very minimal and
outwith somebody occasionally blowing their whistle, there is little to fault.
Prince sounds a little distant during the opening 'Sign O' The Times' and the
audio channels switch from left to right slightly during 'I Could Never Take The
Place Of Your Man', but it's all relative and very minor. One problem with this
release is that 'Purple Rain' on Disc 1 (from the 30th May show) has a drop-out
during the 2nd verse and the following '1999' has a number of rather annoying
clicks throughout. I'm under the impression this is due to a fault which
occurred when the discs were pressed and presumably it affects ALL copies - a
pity as it does spoil the last 5 minutes of the disc. The 30th May show is
fairly typical and perhaps a little straightforward with very little out of the
ordinary occurring. Usually a good gauge of a decent Sign O' The Times show is
whether 'It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night' is extended - unfortunately not in
this case and it's the bare
