Bobby Curtola - Hitchhiker & Other Hits



American oldies' fans will be forgiven for being unfamiliar with Bobby Curtola since he charted only two singles in the U.S., neither of which cracked the Top 40. In his native Canada, however, it was a different story -- several of his singles went to number one, his albums were certified gold, and he was an entertainer of the first rank. Hitchhiker & Other Hits compiles 19 of Curtola's original hit recordings from 1961-1965, including his two U.S. hits: "Fortuneteller" and "Aladdin," both from 1962. "Hand in Hand With You," Curtola's first hit from 1960, appears here in a 1963 version that appeared as a B-side. Del-Fi Records released Curtola's records in America, and his sound bears an uncanny similarity to Del-Fi's Johnny Crawford. Curtola is a much more polished vocalist than Crawford, but both made their string-laden teen idol pop recordings at RCA's Nashville studios. Following the success of "Fortuneteller," Curtola recorded other songs in the same thematic vein, such as "Aladdin" and "Gypsy Heart," but the similarities are only superficial, and none of these songs seem like re-treads. Songwriters Basil and Dyer Hurdon wrote practically all of Curtola's hits, with one exception being a 1965 remake of Floyd Robinson's "Makin' Love." Hitchhiker & Other Hits is an excellent, officially licensed anthology of a talented Canadian teen idol whose work is certain to appeal to fans of Bobby Vinton, Bobby Vee, and Johnny Crawford.
