De film speelt zich af in 1961 ten tijde van de Congo-crisis. Generaal Pat Quinlan en zijn 150 manschappen worden door Hammarskjold van de Verenigde Naties naar de stad gestuurd nadat Katanga zich heeft afgescheiden. Gedurende 6 dagen en nachten worden ze aangevallen door 3000 soldaten van de Congolese regering die worden gesteund door de Franse en Belgische huurlingen die zijn ingehuurd door de mijnbouwbedrijven.
