Legendary Castles: Season 1 Episode 1
Neuschwanstein
Right in the middle of the Alps rises a castle worthy of a fairy tale. With its white stones, towers and turrets of stunning architecture, the castle was a king’s romantic dream that materialised amidst a steep mountain range. At an altitude of 200m stands the colossal project of Ludwig II of Bavaria, the ‘Swan King’ of Neuschwanstein. How did a young king, a Wagner enthusiast, fancy such an innovative castle in 1866, when he was barely 20 years old? What means were necessary to see the king’s vision through? And what architectural challenges did the architects have to overcome during the 20 years of its construction?
