Het Franse M83 werd in 2001 opgericht als het muzikale elektronicaproject van Nicolas Fromageau en Anthony Gonzalez. Na twee albums en een emotioneel belastende tournee besloot Gonzalez het roer naar zich toe te trekken en alleen verder te gaan onder dezelfde naam. Met het o.a. door Ken Thomas (zie ook Sigur Rós, The Sugarcubes, Cocteau Twins en Suede) geproduceerde 'Saturday = Youth' leverde M83 onlangs zijn vijfde album af. Ook dit keer zijn verwijzingen naar Talk Talk, Depeche Mode, OMD, en shoegaze bands als Cocteau Twins en My Bloody Valentine niet uit de lucht. Dronende synthesizerklanken, door dikke lagen elektronica gefilterde gitaren en engelenstemmetjes die semi-poëtische teksten declameren: het levert een verzengend, massief en tegelijk ontroerend geluid op dat je ook live als een oprecht intense ervaring overspoelt.
