based on the folk music of opulent eastern China, this follows the characteristics of the Dragon, god of the East, associated with the element of wood & chueh of the 5 Chinese tones An album designed specifically for the aid of spiritual balance via feng shui principles. The concept is that the five elements of nature (wood, fire, water, earth, metal) can be coupled with the five tones of Chinese music to produce a positive experience via feng shui. The album waxes poetic on a number of uses for the music, from relieving back pain to improving the luck of firstborn children. While the concept of feng shui should perhaps not be mocked, this album doesn't particularly help its cause in any real way with the added commercialization. The music itself is decently performed by a house orchestra (traditional Chinese) for the Wind Records label. It consists of basic, stereotypical Chinese music (largely the silk and bamboo forms heard in movies, etc.), heavy with strings and small flutes. The music does veer toward Western instrumentation it would seem from time to time, only to return to a more stereotypically Chinese form quickly. Pick it up as a quick fix for semi-authentic traditional Chinese music, but not for the feng shui tips. ~ Adam Greenberg Recording information: Shanghai.
