Post Description

Hold On Tight is a truly unique collaboration between Solomon Burke, the legendary King of Soul, and Dutch band De Dijk. De Dijk (The Dyke), named after a famous street in their hometown Amsterdam, is considered to be one of the most important Dutch bands of the past 25 years. They have built an impressive repertoire, which is a contagious mix of soul, blues and rock `n' roll. Solomon Burke was not just an American singer/songwriter, he was an innovator whose timeless music has inspired millions of fans and hundreds of recording artists across the decades. During the half-century that he performed, he drew from his roots: gospel, soul, and blues as well as developing his own style at a time when R&B, and rock were still in their infancy. In 1964he was proclaimed the King of Rock and Soul and in 2001 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. De Dijk rocks! The first time Solomon Burke shared the stage with De Dijk was when he was the bands special guest in Amsterdam in 2007. Burke got so excited on stage that he proclaimed: De Dijk rocks! A later meeting with the American singer resulted in the duet `Het Moot En Het Zal (Enough Is Enough)', a hit for the band in 2008. By then it was clear De Dijk's solid rock and soul formed a perfect backdrop for Solomon's strong vocals and in October 2009, Burke and De Dijk worked together on Hold On Tight at the ICP studios in Brussels for six days. The (originally Dutch) songs of De Dijk were translated in English and re-recorded with Burke for this special occasion. Besides the bands hit songs like Hold On Tight (Hou me vast), What A Woman (Wat een vrouw), Good For Nothing (Nergens good voor), Seventh Heaven (Zevende hemel), Got To Be With You (1k kan het niet alleen), Rose Saved From The Street (Mijn van straat geredde roos) they recorded a brand new track, written by Solomon and De ijk's JB Meijers, called `Text Me'J Respected British musician Jools Holland, a long-time friend of Burke, played piano on the track `What a Woman'. Of the experience, he says: `Solomon Burke was well known by all as the King of SouI. What is perhaps less known, is that he was also the benevolent king of good vibrations. Whenever he sat in and played, he brought up everybody's spirits and brought joy to the music. Because of this, he was a true musical genius. Solomon Burke and De Dijk had been scheduled to perform a sold out show in October at Paradiso, a church converted into a concert hall in Amsterdam Shortly after his arrival in The Netherlands on Sunday October 10th, Solomon Burke passed away at age 70.
