Barny is een jonge, seksueel gefrustreerde weduwe die tijdens de bezetting samen met haar dochtertje in een klein Frans stadje woont. Als communistische militante moet ze totaal niets hebben van het geloof. Toch loopt ze op een dag een kerk binnen en maakt kennis met de intelligente en goed uitziende priester Léon Morin (Belmondo). Ze spreken daarna regelmatig met elkaar af en bij haar ontstaan gevoelens die het celibaat niet toestaat.
