Stacy Clyde - Pleasant Jamboree There's Goo - 1993


Clyde Stacy's only hit, "So Young," charted twice -- in 1957 and 1959. It's a sexy, hypnotic single about a teenage Lolita that sounds like a surefire hit but didn't fare as well as it should have in the marketplace, partly because it was banned in some areas. Stacy's version -- itself a cover of, and an improvement upon, a Dave Lowe record from the previous year -- competed with a couple of other artists' renditions but was the only one to chart. Pleasant Jamboree: There's a Good Rockin' Tonite compiles most of Stacy's early recordings from rare vinyl singles originally released on an assortment of indie labels in the late '50s and early '60s. The disc dubs are noisy, though, and the sound quality of the compilation, overall, is below Eagle's usual standards. The intrusive surface noise and distortion may be forgivable if some of the songs are taken from demo acetates, but the CD booklet doesn't identify the sources. Many of the tracks are barely acceptable with regard to sound quality, but some listeners may feel that it's worth enduring the uneven presentation to hear ace cuts such as the rockabilly classic "Hoy Hoy" (better known from the Collins Kids' cover), the fierce guitar instrumental "Tranquilizer Cins," and, of course, "So Young."
