Het drama vindt plaats tussen de tombes van de Spaanse adel in het mausoleum in het Escorial van Filips II van Spanje. Filips' confrontatie met de grootinquisiteur vindt plaats boven zijn eigen grafkist die op hem staat te wachten, een ijzingwekkende symboliek, net zoals de gigantische crucifix die boven Don Carlo hangt als zijn leven opgeofferd wordt door zijn vader. Antonio Pappano dirigeert het Orkest van The Royal Opera House. In de hoofdrollen: Marina Poplavskaya (sopraan), Robert Lloyd (bariton), Simon Keenlyside (bariton), Eric Halfvarson (bas), Sonia Ganassi (mezzo-sopraan), Ferruccio Furlanetto (bas) en Rolando Villazón (tenor).
