Eind jaren 80 werd housemuziek steeds populairder. Housenummers waren in die tijd echter voornamelijk als individuele tracks verkrijgbaar. Platenmaatschappij Arcade sprong hierop handig in. In 1989 werd de eerste Turn up The Bass-cd uitgebracht, een verzamelalbum met house- en dancemuziek. De Turn up The Bass-reeks zou uitgroeien tot een groot succes. Tussen 1989 en 1993 verschenen er in totaal 25 delen. Veel echte classics uit de begintijd van de housemuziek zijn terug te vinden op de Turn up The Bass-verzamelalbums.
