Gebaseerd op een waargebeurd verhaal. Oost-Timor, 1975. Terwijl Indonesië het land binnenvalt, verdwijnen vijf Australische journalisten spoorloos. Enkele weken later wordt buitenlandcorrespondent Roger East door de charismatische opstandeling José Ramos-Horta uitgenodigd om de situatie van het land en volk te beschrijven. Door buitenlandse druk wordt de roep om onafhankelijkheid voor Oost-Timor groter en ontstaat er een vriendschap tussen Ramos-Horta en East. Maar de eerste wordt president terwijl de tweede vreselijke gebeurtenissen m.b.t journalisten ontdekt.
