In 1982 begon Paul Young een solocarrière. De single Love Of The Common People flopte in Groot-Brittannië. Nadat in Groot-Brittannië het nummer Wherever I Lay My Hat op de eerste plaats was gekomen, kwam er een geremixte versie uit van Love Of The Common People en die versie werd ook in Nederland een hit, nummer 1. Andere grote hits die Paul Young scoorde waren Come Back And Stay en Everytime You Go Away. Ook zong hij mee bij Band Aid.
